Moonah Arts Centre’s popular 2013 Friday Night Concert Series continues on Friday the 10th of May with gypsy jazz trio, L’Esprit de Django

L’Esprit de Django: comprise local musicians Alan Welsh and Julius Schwing, each taking Lead and Rhythm guitar roles, along with Hamish Houston on Double Bass.

As a gypsy jazz band, the audience can expect a lively rendition of 1920’s and 1930’s songs, inspired by the late great Django Reinhardt, including All of Me, Minor Swing, Beginning to See the Light, The World’s Waiting for the Sunrise, Honeysuckle Rose, etc…

Last August, the band had its premiere at ‘Hot August Jazz’ and followed up by appearing at the Hobart Jazz Club’s November club night. Audiences have responded enthusiastically to the catchy tunes and vibrant renditions of the songs, whether or not they are familiar with the material (but most people are surprised at how many of these songs they know or have heard!).

As the name suggests, this band does not aim to duplicate what Django Reinhardt did – he had a violinist as well – but to emulate his spirit which was big-hearted, generous and imaginative. He set a new trend in the Jazz world by using gypsy-inspired improvisation in combination with Jazz Standards…and L’Esprit de Django hopes to set a new trend in Hobart with the revival of these timeless, vigorous melodies.
