Hobart City Council Alderman Philip Cocker today called on the State Government to release its Oil Price Vulnerability Study. “We have been waiting too long for this report and a sense of urgency needs to be brought to this issue”.
The release of a comprehensive report from the NRMA shows Australia would grind to a halt within three weeks with almost no deliveries of food or medicine if its overseas oil and fuel supplies were cut off. The report written by retired RAAF Air Vice-Marshal John Blackburn for the NRMA finds that 85 per cent of transport fuel comes from overseas crude oil or imported fuel.
“We need to understand the Peak Oil implications for Tasmania both in terms of risk of supply and ever increasing costs of fuel as predicted by the International Energy Agency and the International Monetary Fund.
“I congratulate the Meander Valley Council for instigating a study on Peak Oil and how to adapt for their municipality as Hobart City Council is doing.”This is a serious State wide issue that needs State Government Leadership debate and discussion. It is past time they released the Oil Vulnerability Study so we can begin planning to take advantage of the opportunities that would arise from addressing this issue”.
