The Tasmania Human Rights Queer Network is officially launching on 5pm 14 March 2013 at Hobart Fullers Bookstore. The Amnesty International Australia group will be launched by Rodney Croome, the National Convenor of Australian Marriage Equality.

Rodney Croome rose to prominence as a gay human rights advocate, leading the successful campaign to decriminalise homosexuality in Tasmania. He remains a spokesperson for the Tasmanian Gay and Lesbian Rights Group and is a Board Member of Australian Marriage Equality and the International Gay and Lesbian Law Association.

“Regardless of sex, gender, or sexuality people have a right to safety and equal opportunity.

The reality is that people who are in the LGBTIQ community face violations to these rights on a national and international level” says Andrew Badcock, Human Rights Queer Network co-convenor.

Susan Ditter, Executive Officer of gender and sexuality support service Working It Out, will also speak at the event. Queer Network Co-convener, Susan Appleton believes, “it is important that everybody within the LGBTQI community is aware of the support services available to them and Susan and her team do a brilliant job. HRQN want to support these services.”

Tasmania’s Human Rights Queer Network focuses on raising awareness of international human rights abuses against LGBTIQ individuals and communities. The Human Rights Queer Network will also campaign to raise the profile of these issues in Australia.

“We want to work with other Amnesty groups on this issue and offer our support to other queer groups to support local issues and to highlight Amnesty International’s stance on these issues so people are aware that LGBTIQ rights are human rights”, says Andrew.

WHile this is the launch of the Network, the Tasmanian Human Rights Queer Network has undertaken several actions, including sending the Legislative Council members Valentine’s Day cards regarding marriage equality and attending a family BBQ in Launceston to promote marriage equality.
