Latrobe Council’s anti-competitive prohibition on existing Shearwater retailers issue at PUBLIC MEETING this Wednesday
Tuesday 19 February 2013
“The Latrobe Council’s anti-competitive prohibition on existing Shearwater retailers will be a major issue at a PUBLIC MEETING this Wednesday 20 February at 6pm at the Shearwater resort.
The Save Our Seaside Village group will be hosting an Information & Update Public Meeting on Wednesday 20 February 2013 to discuss their call for a state parliamentary inquiry into the Latrobe Council’s prohibition of any new development in the existing town centre of 250 square metres or more.
“This decision unfairly restricts our baker, newsagent, chemist, butcher, bottle shop and supermarket from competing with any new retailers, said Guy Barnett, Spokesperson for the SOSV today.
“The restriction is grossly unfair, anti-competitive and must be removed. The Council approved this anti-competitive restriction and then within 6 weeks did a deal with the developer for a new town centre including a major supermarket and other shops. Questions need answering and fast.
“SOSV warmly welcomes the announcement by the Tasmanian Greens (Monday 18 February – Tim Morris) supporting our call for a Parliamentary Inquiry.
“Plans for two town centres at Shearwater are bizarre and will divide the community. We are not Melbourne or Hobart. What Tasmanian regional town has two town centres?
“Both the Council and the developer have refused to release their plans despite the plans being approved by Council last year. Surely the community has a right to know?
“We encourage members of the community to attend to voice their concerns. The Mayor has been invited to attend as have relevant state and federal MPs, the developer and others. We support development but in the existing town centre.” he concluded.
