Environment Tasmania said it was disappointed with The Hon Tony Burkes announcement today regarding the Tarkine.
The Chief Executive Officer of Environment Tasmania Peter Skillern said “While Environment Tasmania is pleased to see the recognition of indigenous values and heritage being preserved through inclusion in a National Heritage listing; we are disappointed with the overall result.”
“We accept and recognise a need for economic development, particularly within the North West of Tasmania nevertheless this area is one of global significance due to its large tract of temperate rainforest and it is home to more than 60 threatened listed species. In this context it is an area that requires better protection than has been delivered today. This area remains vulnerable to environmental damage under this announcement” Mr Skillern said.
“We appreciate that the Minister has at this stage given up on finding a lasting resolution, however we believe that a boundary can be found that would protect natural values and deliver acceptable social and economic outcomes. As an organisation we will continue to work towards meeting such an objective” said Mr Skillern
