Grant Lock – Afghanistan, Australia and Islam
Complex Afghanistan. Sleeping Australia
Grant and Janna Lock spent 24 extreme years working in the hot spots of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
They will be speaking at the Friday Forum as part of their tour of Tasmania where they have been speaking about their experiences and sharing some of their adventures.
The title of Grant’s book, Shoot Me First, arose from a confrontation near the border of Pakistan and Afghanistan, the home of kidnappers, heroin dealers, and Taliban. Grant was confronted by an angry crowd of bearded, Kalashnikov-toting men who objected to him rebuilding a defunct girls’ school.
“If you do not stop your workmen, we will shoot them,” the burly leader shouted. Grant recalled the girl he had met the day before. She said that she wanted to go to school so she could become a doctor. He took a deep breath, eyeballed the bearded man, and said, “If you are going to shoot them, you will have to shoot me first.”
Grant brings to the Friday Forum his first-hand experiences of hotspots in the Middle East. He brings a unique perspective, able to assess Australian culture and the role of Islam and religion from an informed perspective.
FRIDAY OCTOBER 5, 2012, 1pm-2pm at the cathedral.
