The Premier, Lara Giddings, today (Mon) announced that Her Majesty The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of The Honourable Peter George Underwood AC as Governor of Tasmania for a further term of office.
“Peter Underwood is highly regarded and an extremely hard-working Governor,” Ms Giddings said.
“As a State we have been very fortunate to have Mr Underwood as Governor and I am delighted that he has agreed to continue in the role for a further term. “Apart from carrying out his formal constitutional roles, he has been an outstanding ambassador for Tasmania on a national stage and has encouraged Tasmanians to have pride in their great state.”
Already this year, His Excellency has given over 50 speeches, hosted many functions at Government House including Dinners for visiting Ambassadors and High Commissioners and a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Open Day, and attended events in all parts of Tasmania. The Governor is also patron of around 100 not-for-profit organisations.
Ms Giddings said Tasmania would also continue to benefit from the significant contribution made by Frances Underwood.
“Mrs Underwood has made an important contribution to Tasmanian public life in her own right through her involvement in a number of charities and organisations of which she is patron.
“She is also Chair of the Tasmanian Antarctic Gateway working group which has a major role in coordinating Tasmania’s influence in the Antarctic Region, which is an ever-increasing economic driver for the state.
Government House regularly hosts receptions, award ceremonies and official visits by international dignitaries.
Mr and Mrs Underwood have used these occasions to showcase the best Tasmanian produce and also talent, regularly exposing local musicians to national and international audiences.
“On behalf of all Tasmanians I would like to thank His Excellency and Mrs Underwood for their great contribution to Tasmania and I look forward to their continuing role”
His Excellency’s term of appointment will now continue until the first of April 2016.
