A WorkSafe Tasmania sporting theme round will help spread the vital message of the importance of
being safe at work on northern Tasmanian football fields and netball courts TODAY.

WorkSafe Tasmania campaign spokesperson Bob Gozzi said all players would wear orange armbands
to raise awareness and spark conversation between players and spectators about the real reasons
for being safe at work, which are often not at work at all.

“In 2011, there were 9,312 injuries reported in workplaces across Tasmania,” Mr Gozzi said.
“This translates to two football teams being injured at work every working day in Tasmania or the
equivalent of five netball teams.

“The physical, emotional and financial impact of a workplace injury can be devastating for a worker,
and employers lose out too, with experience, productivity, opportunities and revenue all affected.
“We are issuing a challenge to the Tasmanian netball and football communities, which spread far
and wide, to work safely and discuss any safety issues with their workplace.”

Mr Gozzi said as part of the WorkSafe Theme Round, the North Eastern Netball Association and the
Northern Tasmanian Football Association would receive presentations from WorkCover Safety
Advisor Phil John and a physio.

“Players will learn about good health and wellbeing practices not only at home but in the workplace
from our Health and Wellbeing Advisor,” he said.

“They will also be given strategies for preventing and treating muscular injuries both on the court, at
work and at home.

“Teams and individual players will also be encouraged to upload photos that depict their reason for
being safe at work as part of the WorkSafe Your Important Reason TV campaign. Several entries are
selected each week to feature in the TV advertisement.”

The North Eastern Netball Association games and activities will be running all day and the Northern
Tasmanian Football Association game would be between Division 1 Scottsdale vs. Rocherlea.

WorkSafe Tasmania formed partnerships with AFL Tasmania and Netball Tasmania in 2011 to engage
with the estimated 200,000 Tasmanians involved in regional sport across the State to elevate the
importance of work health and safety and ultimately reduce injuries and fatalities.
