Huon Valley Environment Centre – The Great Southern Beanie Festival,
Opening event this Saturday 2 June at 2pm
Huon Valley Environment Centre is holding the inaugural Great Southern Beanie Festival, and the opening of the festival is 2 June at 2pm.
The Great Southern Beanie Festival is a community based project that aims to bring community together, people can share their stories and make beanies together, or make them at home and donate them to the exhibition. It was initiated by volunteers at the Huon Valley Environment Centre to get people talking together about the challenges we have with environmental issues and how we can move forward as a community.
Idea was inspired by the Alice Springs Beanie Festival – and their have a concept of sharing old yarns and stories. The Huon Valley Environment Centre promotes community based involvement in the arts, this festival is about the hand made textiles that is so popular in our community.
For the past nine months people have been meeting and making beanies in the environment centre on a Friday. People have been linked to the festival from all the knitting groups from Dover to Bruny Island. Beanies are being made by children and adults. And beanies have been made in a variety of ways using techniques such as, knitting, crochet, sewing, felt, weaveing.
Beanies will be sold as a fundraiser for the Huon Valley Environment Centre and are on display in the environment centre till the 15th June. The event has been sponsored by the Cygnet Arts Council. Saturday 2nd June, from 2pm, there will be tea and coffee, cakes and biscuits and celebrations of sharing a textile based community arts project in the Huon Valley Environment Centre, in Huonville. All are welcome.
