The first readings from newly installed water meters at properties across southern Tasmania are revealing a number of higher than expected readings potentially caused by leaks on customer’s property.

With two-part water pricing to commence for all customers on 1 July, Southern Water is writing to customers who had higher than expected usage on their first reading to make them aware of a possible leak.

Executive Manager Customer Services, Angela Wright, said that now was the time to fix leaks on your property ahead of a Water Usage Charge being introduced for all customers from 1 July.

“The benefit of having water meters is that these leaks, which may have been present for months or even years, can be identified and addressed by property owners,” Ms Wright said.

“If a potential leak is identified now, there is an opportunity for the customer to fix the problem before the Water Usage Charge comes into effect on 1 July.

“We encourage all customers to use their water meter as a tool to monitor their usage and check for leaks. This can be done by turning off all the taps for an hour or two, or overnight, and checking whether the dials on your water meter continue to turn. If they do, you may have a leak and this should be investigated by a plumber as soon as possible.”

Many of the water meters which have been installed in the past 18 months are now being read to establish a base reading and give customers an indication of their usage before the Water Usage Charge takes effect.

The Water Usage Charge for the first quarterly account will be based on the average daily water use since the base reading, but only applies from 1 July.
