The TCCI has applauded a move by the cities of Hobart and Launceston to
work closer together on matters of joint importance.
TCCI Chairman Andrew Heap said the move was an important first step to
ensure voices of Hobart and Launceston were heard loud and clear by
decision makers in the State and Federal Governments as well as the
interstate boardrooms of potential investors.
“Over the years, the rivalry between Hobart and Launceston has been
legendary and it is heartening to see a more mature approach to fostering
the interests of the two regions,” Mr Heap said.
“While many people think the parochial issues between the north and south
is a bit of a joke, the reality is Tasmania has missed out as those
considering investing here marvel at the small minded nature of the debate
and take their investment dollars elsewhere.”
Mr Heap said with the State facing significant economic challenges, the
signal that the two cities had sent by indicating they were willing to put their
differences aside to work together for the economic benefit of Tasmania
was significant.
“You only have to look interstate to areas such as Geelong to see how local
government working together can bring about real change and act as a
stimulus to investment and growth,” Mr Heap said.
“In Geelong, the city has managed to turn itself into an economic
powerhouse through local government working together to show potential
investors and both, State and Federal Governments that it is open for
business.
“The Launceston and Hobart City Council’s are to be congratulated for this
move,” Mr Heap said.
