Kat Armstrong wins women’s leadership award for prison mentoring program

“Kat Armstrong is the Gold First Place winner of the Australian Centre for Leadership for Women 2012 ‘Sustaining Women’s Empowerment in Communities and Organisations’ award. Kat won this award for her leadership in establishing the Women in Prison Advocacy Network (WIPAN). Kat will be presented with her award for this International Women’s Day” said Dr Diann Rodgers-Healey, Executive Director, Australian Centre for Leadership for Women. http://www.leadershipforwomen.com.au/

“Our organisation WIPAN, mentors women when they are released from prison and to date, has had overwhelming success in keeping women in the community and from further reoffending” said Kat Armstrong Director of WIPAN.

Kat Armstrong went on to say “I amdeeply honoured to have been given this award and share it with the women we mentor. Eighty two percent have not reoffended and gone back to prison. This is a remarkable figure given 77% of the women who enter our mentoring program have served on average, five prior sentences. Mentoring has given these women the support, skills and networks to turn their lives around.”
