The Cycling Awards Night held in Hobart last night marked the official launch of Bike Week for 2012.
Bicycle Tasmania presented the Clips Award to Mark Bowden of Bike Ride for his shop’s support for the www.WhyRide.com.au campaign that includes advertising on buses in Burnie, Launceston and Hobart.
Chair of Cycling South, Cr Flora Fox, presented the Cadence Award to Jeff Dunn for his voluntary work as President of Bicycle Tasmania that has seen the cycle advocacy group become a stronger voice.
Bike Week runs from 10-18 March across Tasmania and involves a series of bike rides for all ages and abilities. Rides include a Mountain Bike Treasure Hunt in Huntingfield this Sunday, a women’s only 20 km ride on Monday, a history ride in South Hobart, and the classic Century and Half Century Ride on Sunday 18th March.
The Monday event includes an electric bike display and test rides.
A new addition to the program is a Clarence Family Ride along the foreshore from Kangaroo Bay on Sunday 18th March.
An Australian Bicycle Council survey found that half of all Tasmanian households have access to a bicycle. Bicycle Tasmania Facilities Development Manager, Emma Pharo, says Bike
Week is a great opportunity for everyone to get their bikes out of the shed and join in. Bike maintenance workshops are available for those bikes that need cobwebs dusted off.
