From my vantage point at the southern end of the Pork Barrel Bypass (aka Kingston Bypass), I can see a short section of the bypass as well as a short section of the Channel Highway.
The bypass was open for north bound traffic from Monday morning last until Friday evening, when it was closed again.
For the last three nights, beginning Friday 25/11/11, including the early morning of Saturday and Sunday until dawn, and now on Sunday night, vehicles with flashing orange lights have been patrolling the newly constructed road.
At 03:30 on Sunday morning there were two vehicles because I could see both of them simultaneously. At other times there may have been only one, but I suspect two, because of the time difference between their appearances.
They appear to be patrolling in a random pattern, sometime traveling north on the Channel Highway, sometimes on the bypass, and sometime checking the cutting close to Maddocks Rd.
What are they looking for?
Aboriginal banners hung from the new overpasses?
Naughty words painted on the road surface?
Roadside IEDs?
how bizarre!
Or is someone being just a tad paranoid?
