Sydney, Wednesday 9 November 2011: Three forest activists have been sentenced and fined $200 each in Sydney’s Downing Centre local court this morning. The climbers scaled the Sydney Opera House on 8 October and abseiled down the largest sail, unfurling a giant banner stating ‘No Harvey No! Stop selling Aussie forest destruction!’
‘We took action to bring the plight of our great and iconic native forests to another great Australian icon in the heart of Sydney, and to send a clear message to Harvey Norman that profiting from Aussie forest destruction is no way to do business in this day and age’ said Miranda Gibson, one of the climbers sentenced this morning.
The Sydney Opera House action, which received widespread international media attention, took place as part of a global 24 hours of action targeting Harvey Norman, with 41 events taking place at Harvey Norman stores and iconic landmarks in 17 countries, including stores in Slovenia and New Zealand.
‘It’s time for Harvey Norman to take care of business, move into the 21st century, and immediately stop selling furniture and flooring products that are sourced from the decimation of our globally recognised native forests. There are environmentally responsible alternatives readily available’ said Ula Majewski, spokesperson for The Last Stand.
