Activists face court for taking action against Aussie forest destruction at the Sydney Opera House. Downing Centre local court, Sydney
Sydney, Tuesday 8 November 2011:Five activists will face court this morning after taking action at Sydney’s iconic Opera House last month to highlight Harvey Norman’s role in helping to drive native forest destruction.
Three of the activists scaled the Opera House and unfurled a huge 10 x 12 metre banner stating ‘No Harvey No! Stop selling Aussie forest destruction!’ on the 8th October. This morning’s case is being heard at the Downing Centre in Sydney.
‘We took action to stand up for Australia’s world-class forests, which are still being destroyed by industrial logging operations every single day. Harvey Norman needs to take immediate action and stop profiting from Aussie forest destruction’ said Miranda Gibson, one of the climbers facing charges.
The Opera House action took place as part of a global 24 hours of action targeting Harvey Norman, with 41 actions taking place in 17 countries.
‘It’s time for Harvey Norman to move into the 21st century and immediately stop selling furniture and flooring products sourced from native forest devastation’ said Ula Majewski, spokesperson for The Last Stand.
