The Tasmanian Greens have welcomed today’s Upper House vote in support of a state-based container deposit scheme.

Greens Environment spokesperson Cassy O’Connor MP said the vote in support of the motion, introduced by Greg Hall MLC, places more pressure on the Environment Minister Brian Wightman to stop procrastinating on the issue.

“Today’s vote in support of a state-based container deposit scheme by the Upper House should be a wake up call for both Labor and Liberal parties,” Ms O’Connor said.

“Tasmanians are sick of hearing the same old excuses from environment ministers that we need to wait for action nationally. That excuse has passed its used-by date and we now need to move on with container deposit legislation in Tasmania.”

“We have a beautiful island here, but it is contaminated in too many places by litter. We are among the worst litterbugs in the nation and Tasmania does have the capacity to implement its own container deposit scheme to bring down the amount of discarded waste in the environment.”
