The Greens today welcomed the myriad of developments that are set to provide a range of functions in the City. Lord Mayoral candidate Alderman Helen Burnet was positive about the significant investment in Hobart occurring over the next 4 years and described it as a boon for the local economy. Ald Burnet described as negative and misleading a spate of attacks on the Greens’ record on development.
“I will continue to talk about the positive developments that are happening in Hobart. The Greens are not anti-development, and the facts speak for themselves. How is it that we have over ½ billion dollars of development coming on line in this city, and a trend which bucks national statistics for slowing growth as a result of the Global Financial Crisis?
“I welcome the mix of private and public developments which will help invigorate the city, including the Myer centre redevelopment, the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies on Castray Esplanade, Menzies Stage 2, and other university initiatives.
“This also fits my vision for a strategic approach to coordinating activities for Greater Hobart, and it is a positive attitude that will enrich our city and prepare us into the future.
The developments coming on line include:
Parliament Square – a mixture of commercial and office development $100m
IMAS $50m
Stage 2 of Menzies Centre $50m
The RHH $350m
Myer $120m
“If anything, there is a considerable contruction boom, so I would refute that the Greens have had a negative impact on development – both public and private – in our City.
“What I would like to see is a Council which is discerning about developments, so that we have a suitable mixture and range of quality developments across our City.
“To support these calls, the Greens have consistently called for Council to consider a range of incentives for developers to consider residential inner city development.
“Last month I also called for a transit hub to facilitate an improvement in transport around and to our City.” Alderman Burnet concluded.
