The Community is Ready for Marriage Reform

The Tasmanian Greens Leader Nick McKim said today that it’s clear that marriage equality has gained mainstream acceptance in the Tasmanian community.

Mr McKim spoke tonight at a forum organised by the Tasmanian Greens Denison Branch on the subject of “Should Tasmania be the first state to enact same sex marriage laws?”

“The forum heard from a range of speakers from various walks of life, but what stood out for me was that this an issue primarily about love and family,” Mr McKim said.

“When it comes down to it, true family values are about love, compassion and respect, not about whether or not two people in a married relationship happen to be a man and a woman.”

“The time for moral preaching and political buck-passing is past. Marriage equality is a mainstream concept in the Tasmanian community and all that’s left now is for the laws to be changed to end the legally-entrenched discrimination against same sex couples.”

Mr McKim thanked all of the speakers for their contribution to the discussion.

“I would particularly like to thank Els McIntosh, Martine Delaney and David Foster who all had the courage and conviction to come forward and share personal stories of their own families.”

“Their touching, personal stories were a reminder that it’s time for us to take the politics out of this issue once and for all.”

“David Foster and the Greens certainly don’t see eye-to-eye on every issue, but he’s a man who’s prepared to put politics aside to stand up for what he believes in.”
