The Australian Greens have secured an additional five million dollars to boost childcare services around the country, including 63 centres in Tasmania as they transition to the National Quality Framework.
Greens Senator for Tasmania, Christine Milne said grants of up to $5000 will be directed to services in areas of disadvantage which can be used to hire temporary staff while permanent staff do training courses, and update their OH&S requirements or buy play materials for children which relate to meeting the new standards.
“This will greatly benefit rural and disadvantaged communities across the state – with grants for 63 centres throughout every Tasmanian electorate.
“The disadvantaged centres were identified by the SEIFA (Socio Economic Indexes For Areas) method.
“Both Senator Bob Brown and I are delighted there will be better resourced childcare in regional Tasmania.
“The Australian Greens worked hard to get this extra funding that will see significant improvements to staff skills, workplace health and safety and new learning and play materials for children,”
“This is a big win for Tasmanian families delivered by Greens in balance of power,” Senator Milne said.
It is expected that 20 centres in Bass, 21 in Braddon, 11 in Lyons, 7 in Denison, and 4 in Franklin will benefit from the Greens win.
