Last night Glenorchy City Council voted to have the Local Government Board independently
review the number of Aldermen that sit on the council. 6 out of the 11 present Aldermen
voted in favour of the review proposed by Alderman Matt Stevenson and seconded by
Alderman Luke Martin.
“Glenorchy City Council raised its rates by around 7.5% this year which was on top of a
nearly 15% increase last year, so it is pleasing to see that those 6 Aldermen had the vision to
review if 12 Aldermen was value for money”, Alderman Stevenson said.
“Council has now gone through operational change losing water and sewerages services
from its responsibility, so it is an appropriate time to review if a lesser number of Aldermen
could provide the appropriate level of community representation and governance to council
“This adds to the successful motion I moved last month to have the council investigate joint
tender opportunities with other councils for electricity and telecommunication contracts.
“Ratepayers need to know that the council is serious about reducing its costs – and showing
leadership by reviewing the number of aldermen on council starts to send that signal.
