The Labor Member for Denison, David Bartlett, has announced he will resign from State Parliament, effective today.
“I realise this decision will leave the Government a member short for the next two weeks, while the recount to replace me is conducted,” Mr Bartlett said.
“However, I have spoken to the Premier, and she is comfortable with that situation.
“I have made the decision to leave earlier than I originally planned, because my staying on has created an unnecessary distraction for the Government.
“Over the next few weeks, the Parliament will deal with a difficult budget – but one that will set Tasmania up for a solid and prosperous future.
“I’m proud to have been part of the team that helped shape it.
“However, that budget requires the undivided attention of the Government. The Parliament should not be side-tracked by an Opposition obsessed with personality politics rather than policy.
“The electorate issues I wanted to complete, I will deal with as a private citizen.
“I have great confidence in Lara Giddings as Premier and wish her and the Government well.
“I am confident the Labor-Green Government I was instrumental in pulling together will continue to grow and mature, and go from strength-to-strength.
“I like to think that part of my legacy will be giving real meaning to the idea of co-operative politics, and making it a working reality.
“That will be an issue of lasting pride to me.
“I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude and thanks to the electors of Denison for allowing me to serve them, during my years as their local member,” he said.
