Tasmania’s new Commissioner for Children has told a parliamentary inquiry more than $30 million needs to be spent fixing the state’s Child Protection system.
Aileen Ashford has outlined 17 recommendations to a hearing in Hobart.
Ms Ashford has proposed legislative changes, new programs and reviews within child protection.
Her 17 recommendations include access to counselling for all children dealing with family violence issues and a review of the child and adolescent mental health service.
Ms Ashford says the child protection legislative framework needs a complete overhaul including decision making principles by case workers.
She told the inquiry between $30 and $40 million needs to be spent on the system.
