Napier a first among equals 4

TASMANIANS are mourning the loss of a pioneering politician known for her integrity and for speaking out against injustice.

Early yesterday Sue Napier, 62, of Launceston, died after nearly two years battling breast cancer.

Mrs Napier served in the Tasmanian Parliament as member for Bass for 18 years until illness forced her to withdraw from the March state election.

She was the first Liberal woman to become a minister, the first female deputy premier and first woman to lead the Liberal Party.

Leaders from all sides of politics and people who knew her as a young physical education teacher shared their memories of a tireless worker who championed the cause of people who were disadvantaged or suffered discrimination.
