Southern Water has resolved resident issues concerning the placing of a pipeline through the Egg Island canal, an integral piece of infrastructure in the Huon Valley Regional Water Scheme.
Stuart McFadzean, Southern Water’s Manager Project Delivery, said Southern Water had taken concerns raised by local residents into account and incorporated mutually beneficial solutions into the final design.
“This pipeline will have minimal aesthetic impact on the canal. It’s positioned below the water level, below the Lowest Astronomical Tide, and for the most part will be buried beneath silt. There will be no posts positioned in the canal, and the air valves at each end of the canal will be concealed as much as is possible.
“The material removed from the bottom of the canal to allow the pipeline to be installed will be redistributed in a way that will not impact on the existing state of navigability of the canal during any tide. The pipeline will lie along the canal and remain within one metre of the northern bank at all times.”
These conditions have now been incorporated into the final design.
Mr McFadzean added that an announcement would soon be made regarding the site of the Franklin pump station, another central piece of infrastructure in the Scheme.
“We are working towards a solution that we think best addresses the community concerns expressed during the consultation process. We thank the community for their patience during this process.”
Work on the Huon Valley Regional Water Scheme is planned to commence soon and be completed by June 2012.
