Launceston Independent, Peter Kaye, today confirmed that he would be a candidate in the seat of Bass at the upcoming State election.

“I think it is important for our democracy that people have the opportunity to vote for people and not just parties.

We are now seeing the distasteful spectacle of candidates trying to buy seats for themselves in Parliament with $50000 and $100000 campaigns.

It is becoming like America where, unless you are wealthy, you can’t stand and I believe that is wrong, unfair and a very unhealthy way to go.”

Mr Kaye said if he were elected he would simply be there as a spokesman for the average person in the street.

“I would use every opportunity in Question Time to put forward questions from the general public for the responsible Ministers to answer directly.

Question Time has become an orchestrated sideshow with questions written by every party’s Question Committee being used to, not get answers to community concerns, but rather to get a media opportunity to further push their party’s agenda.

Members of Parliament should be there to reflect the wishes of the majority of their electorate on the things that matter and not be subservient to a party doctrine in return for endorsement at the 2014 election.

We need people who put our community and people first. We don’t need more politicians who always put their party first.”
