Govt Plays Politics While Northern Suburbs Wait

The Tasmanian Greens today demanded to know why the Bartlett Government appears to be sitting on the long-awaited Urban Passenger Review Study which was due to be completed by August, and called on the Infrastructure Minister Graeme Sturges to release the study and reveal why Metro Tasmania was not involved in any of the consultations.
Greens Infrastructure spokesperson Tim Morris MP, who will be attending this afternoon’s Hobart Northern Suburbs Railway meeting at Moorilla, accused Minister Sturges of cynically delaying plans for passenger light rail into Hobart’s northern suburbs until the State election draws closer.
“The Infrastructure Minister originally promised a feasibility study into passenger light rail which then morphed into this larger urban passenger review study, but the study now appears to have disappeared down a black hole and I hope all those attending this afternoon’s meeting are well aware of Labor’s time-wasting and duplicity on this project,” said Mr Morris.
“The major delay in delivering the results of this study and the failure to even consult Metro Tasmania raises questions about whether passenger light rail is still being assessed as promised by the Bartlett Government, or whether it is being cynically held back as an election announcement.”
“I will be making it clear to all those attending this afternoon’s meeting that the Infrastructure Minister Graeme Sturges and the Bartlett Government have prioritised their own electoral fortunes over and above the desperate need for a light rail link to Hobart’s northern suburbs,” said Mr Morris.
