The Tasmanian Greens today called on Arts Tasmania to reconsider its decision to de-fund Edge Radio’s unique New Media Arts Producer Initiative which has been showcasing new Tasmanian visual artists each month.

Greens Youth and Arts spokesperson Cassy O’Connor MP said this novel initiative from Edge has provided a great opportunity for young Tasmanian artists, giving them the opportunity to exhibit and discuss their art via new media channels available through the radio station and its website.

“The New Media Arts Producer Initiative gives new artists the chance to explore and create works for a wider audience and to contribute to Tasmania’s rich artistic culture,” said Ms O’Connor.

“Edge Radio provides an important public broadcasting service and has earned our support for the cutting edge initiatives that it is bringing to Tasmania.”

“I really think Arts Tasmania should have another look at this decision as Edge Radio was only asking for a small sum of money relative to the global budget – and certainly relative to $3 million that the Treasurer just wasted on the aborted TOTE sale.”

“Our bright young creators of new media deserve support, and the Greens are calling on Arts Tasmania to seriously reconsider its decision to de-fund this novel initiative,” said Ms O’Connor. Edge Radio “Featured Visual Artist,” November 2009, http://www.edgeradio.org.au/blog/
