THE revelation new home builders will be slugged thousands of dollars thanks to the Rudd Government is further evidence of the lack of detail released on its National Broadband Network (NBN) roll-out, Tasmanian Liberal Senator Stephen Parry said today.
“The Labor Government have had one `good news’ announcement after another in Tasmania about the NBN roll-out, but ask the most obvious of questions and the lack of planning becomes clear,’’ Senator Parry said.
“Potential customers have no idea how much a NBN service will cost a month.
“The taxpayer has no clear idea how much of their money the Rudd Government is committing to the roll-out in Tasmania.
“And, on a point that will concern many, we do not know whether cabling will generally be laid above or below ground through the streets of our suburbs and towns.
“Now we discover Labor is of a mind to slug those who build new homes after July 1 next year with the cost of installing the cabling – whether you want it or not – when it is to be provided everywhere else at public expense.’’
Senator Parry said those communities earmarked to be the first to have the NBN rolled out in their towns had every right to know what it is going to cost them.
“Fluffy media announcements saying this town or that is to get the NBN are meaningless unless the local community knows what it means,’’ he said.
