Forestry Tasmania has recently bought and taken over a local sawmill that went down the gurgler.
He lost his home and his wife!
We stood with the previous owner as he swore at the log trucks going past with good native forest logs going to the chipper.
He wasn’t a ‘privileged’ FT sawmiller.
The current word about town at the moment in Smithton, is that FT is also starting their own sawmilling business in Smithton.
This government business enterprise helped force a number of local employment generating sawmills out of business and now basically the government wants to take over!
There’s something deeply wrong when 3 sawmills generally dealing in specialty timber, which have been operating for years have been forced out and very conveniently the government forestry business decides it will fill the gap.
How did this happen?
More importantly, who cares??
