· Liberals announced rent holiday for Housing Tasmania pensioners a month ago

· We welcome Labor, yet again, following our lead

· Pensioners are doing it tough and for their hard won pension rise to have been clawed back in higher Housing Tasmania rents would have been unacceptable

I welcome the Labor Government’s decision to follow the lead of the Tasmanian Liberals and extend a Housing Tasmania rent holiday for pensioners, so that their hard won pension increase is not eaten up by higher rents.

A month ago, the Liberals announced that we would protect pensioners from Housing Tasmania rent rises for a further two years.

We’ve been urging the government to follow our lead ever since, and today they have finally done so.

The Federal Government had also urged the State Government to extend the rent holiday, saying it would be unacceptable for any Premier to claim the increased pension.

This decision is important for pensioners, who are struggling with higher costs of living imposed by this government.

It also shows that yet again, it is the Liberals who are showing the leadership and vision this State needs for the future, while the Labor Government simply plays catch-up.
