Liberal candidate, Ald Elise Archer calls on the State Government to immediately rule out selling off the historic (former) South Hobart Primary School for commercial development.

Liberal Candidate for Denison, Alderman Elise Archer, wants to ensure the Adult Ed heritage site in South Hobart, which recently closed, is not sold by the State Government.

“I call on the Premier to immediately rule out selling off this historic site for commercial development, which was once the South Hobart Primary School,” says Ald Elise Archer.

“This historic heritage building was built with public funds in 1895 for educational use. Now Adult Education has vacated the site, the Premier and Education Minister David Bartlett must reassure the public that the buildings will not be sold for any private purpose.”

“If Mr Bartlett fails to do that, people will be rightly cynical about the State Government’s intentions in regard to this public facility which should remain in public ownership,” says Ald Elise Archer.

“There are a number of community opportunities for this site which could include leasing to an organisation or not for profit organisation with a community focus,” says Ald Elise Archer.

“I am aware that the Australian Wooden Boat Festival has expressed an interest in leasing the site already and there are opportunities for such an organisation to manage the site should other community groups wish to use any remaining part of the site.”

“I believe the building is heritage listed and therefore, it must be preserved for the South Hobart and greater Hobart communities into the future,” Ald Elise Archer says.
