This is the perfect recipe for creating lots of sound at your next ‘Drumming Out’ get-together.
Ingredients:
1 largish stainless steel pot
1 wooden rolling pin (with handles)
1 set of ‘ear-muffs’
a clutch of terrified politicians (must be corrupt)
a large group of people (for democracy)
Drums are no good. They are designed to make a pleasing sound. I found the most effective ‘instrument’ to be a large, stainless steel pot; the kind you make jam in. Not too big as you need to be able to hold it comfortably by its handles while you bash the crap out of it. If it’s too big your hand & arms suffer & it becomes awkward to hold. The sound it produces when struck is phenomenally loud & most unpleasant in pitch. It tends to ‘ring out’ as well, meaning that the sound travels well. Don’t use a good pot as I found after testing a range of our pots that the cheaper pots are thinner & make a lot more noise. If you use a cheaper pot it is much easier replaced & you won’t be chopped into small bits by the cook in your house when you return their best pot mangled beyond recognition. Hardware stores & Chickenfeed usually have cheap pots.
For the striker, I found a wooden rolling-pin to be excellent. The kind with handles on each end is best for a good grip. It had perfect ‘weight’, was solid, meaning it I could whack it mercilessly without it breaking & added a just that little piece of menace.
Finally, ear protection. A good set of ear muffs are a necessity as the sound is literally deafening.
