takayna rainforest waste dump works thwarted for 112th day

Conservationists have thwarted Chinese state-owned miner MMG’s plans to access their proposed tailings dam site in the takayna rainforest for the 112th day. takayna defenders have locked into the road and a tree-sitter maintains an occupation of the sky over the access road.

“MMG will not be allowed to dump 25 million cubic metres of acid-producing, heavy metals tailings into takayna’s rainforests. People are arriving every day to stand in defence of these forests and the wildlife that call them home,” said Bob Brown Foundation takayna / Tarkine Campaigner Scott Jordan.

“We are a week away from the Federal Court hearing our application for an injunction against these works, and MMG are trying to force their way in ahead of the court dates. It is outrageous that after undertaking illegal works last year, illegal grants of mine leases and their illegal closure of a public road, they would again try to circumvent the court.”

“These forests are irreplaceable. MMG has another option that won’t destroy precious rainforest habitat.”

MMG are 15 months behind in their proposed development. To date, 74 people have been arrested preventing MMG’s works.
