Media release – Westbury Region Against the Prison Inc, 4 April 2022

Consultation outcomes please!

In September last year Premier Gutwein announced that the Ashley Youth Detention Centre site would be considered for the Northern Regional Prison.

More than 6 months have passed and, here in Westbury, we are no closer to knowing what the decision on the Brushy Rivulet reserve, just up the road, will be.

The consultation process on the future use of the Ashley site ended three weeks ago. WRAP has been informed that public input into the process was limited.

We have therefore written to the Northern Correctional Centre asking for an update on the outcomes of the consultation process.

Everyone has waited far too long to know what the Government plans to do in our municipality, and the silence is deafening.

We urge everyone interested in the outcome to write directly to the Northern Correctional Team, pressing them for a date by which we will know the outcome.

After seven months, we have a right to know what the future holds for our region.
