THE HAG
Pulp mill construction will begin next month with the pipeline in the Trevallyn reserve …
Hag has received the text of an email from an interested party. This is an extract:

“em>I met today with Gunns representatives as well as XXX.

The work clearing the pipeline through the reserve will commence soon (next month), and a concrete pad will be constructed near the top of the hill near
Way FM.

3 or 4 hectares will ultimately be affected by the pipeline, but will mostly be rehabilitated. Trees will not be allowed to regrow on the part above ground, but understorey will be regenerated and planted. I think most of the regeneration will occur naturally from seed in the topsoil (which they will be carefully replacing). They will be doing weed control.

To offset the part loss of vegetation along the pipeline, an offset area (of 2 hectares has been suggested) will be planted. “Offset” means that the damage done to the environment in one place is made up for by fixing a place somewhere else.

XXX they could plant into open areas which are currently being used by 4WDs to illegally access the reserve. The idea being that the plants (and possibly fencing around patches) would prevent access, as well as being extra plants.”
