Tasmania Police are investigating various incidents of strangers approaching children in Hobart’s inner suburbs.
Police said today they are following up a report of a child approached in Lenah Valley. The incident occurred just after school hours on Thursday afternoon.
The primary school student reported that a man they didn’t know approached and then followed them for a few minutes as they were walking home after school. The incident occurred about 3pm, on Lenah Valley Road, near the milk factory.
The man is described as being about 30 or 40 years old, about 170-175cm tall with grey/white hair and a medium build. He was wearing a black hoodie, black pants and black shoes and reflective glasses.
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who has information about the man, is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at crimestopperstas.com.au.
The Lenah Valley incident came after a report was made in June about a similar occurrence in nearby New Town.
On that occasion a child reported that a man they didn’t know approached them on Cross Street near the Jackman and McRoss Bakery between 7.30-8am. The incident occurred on the morning of 29 June.
The man was in a grey sedan, had a beard, and he was wearing a black hooded jumper.
The black hoodie is common to both incidents, and they occurred less than 2 kilometres from each other.
Tasmanian Times asked the Police if they were considering linkages between the two reports. A spokesperson said they were unable to confirm a link at this stage but the investigation of any report would use the crime database to look for events and people that were possibly connected.
Police said parents are encouraged to talk about personal safety with their children:
• Try to walk with friends if you can.
• Be aware of your surroundings.
• And report any suspicious behaviour to the school, parents or police.
