“We know that the Tarkine is world class, we know that the Tarkine could create 1100 jobs and deliver more than $50 million per year for the North-West coast if we protect it as a National Park & World Heritage area and get a good sensible regional tourism plan in place,” said Dr Phill Pullinger, President of the Tarkine National Coalition, “The Tarkine could be an icon as well recognised Nationally and internationally as Kakadu if we get things right,” he said, “This Green package will unlock the economic potential of the Tarkine by creating an iconic National Park and fostering 12 exciting and innovative tourism projects for the whole Tarkine region,” he concluded.

EXCITEMENT OVER GREENS’ TARKINE NATIONAL PARK FUNDING PACKAGE
Conservationists have expressed excitement about the Greens’ proposed $23 million Tarkine National Park funding package announced today in Burnie, which, they believe, could be a foundation stone to the transformation of the tourism industry across the North-West and West coast communities.

Scott Jordan is a project officer for the development of two iconic short bushwalks and a major walks and self-drive touring brochure for the Tarkine, “From the Liberals and the Greens, we now have two great tourism plans on the table that are consistent with the Tarkine Tourism Master plan and the broad consensus of how the community would like to see the Tarkine developed. The government needs to take another look at its program, and instead of this economically wasteful, divisive and environmentally destructive loop road, take up the opportunity to do something really productive, innovative and positive,” said Scott Jordan, Tourism Project officer, Tarkine National Coalition.

The Tarkine is a 447,000 hectare wilderness area that is home to more than 60 species of threatened plants and animals, and contains Australia’s largest temperate rainforest. The Tarkine National Coalition are working to see the Tarkine protected as a National Park & World Heritage area with a well thought out and funded tourism & management plan put in place for the area.
