TASMANIANS AGAINST THE PULPMILL (TAP)
Media Release January 1st 2009

Community Action kicks off for 2009, the Year of Reckoning, in the streets of Launceston on Jan 2nd outside Jodie Campbell’s office in St John St., as Environment Minister Peter Garret is set to decide on final Gunns mill approvals on January 5th. Following his decision, whichever way it goes, there will be a follow up action outside Jodie Campbell’s office on Jan 6th 2009.

“The state and federal Labor Party obsession with the pulp mill is driving the Tamar Region into recession. People have held off investing here because of the threat of the pulp mill. The property market in the Tamar Valley collapsed years ago. If, in the unlikely event that the pulp mill is built, there will be an even greater flight of capital from this region”, said Tap spokesperson Bob McMahon.

“Environment Minister Garrett has a chance to turn that around on Jan 5th 2009 by refusing to grant the final approvals for Gunns mill.

“BUT the indicators are not good,” continued McMahon. “The approvals Garrett has granted so far have been on a “nod and a wink” basis. TAP proved that with its own Road Kill Monitoring Survey, by comparison with which the Gunns version was incomplete and inadequate. Yet Garrett signed off on it and granted an extension to Jan 5th 2009 for the completion of the modules Gunns failed to complete by the original deadline.

“There will be serious consequences if, as the community fears, Garrett grants Gunns their final mill approvals. Tasmanians will know Labor has betrayed them. For a starter, Jodie Campbell’s political career will be over for which she can thank Garrett. She will be yet another one term wonder in Bass.

“Should Garrett grant the approvals there will be no doubt that Labor is closed for business, as most Australians are beginning to believe, unless you belong to the dinosaur industries of logging, mining or last century’s automobile,” concluded McMahon.

We will partially brick up the door to Jodie Campbell’s office as a symbolic representation that should Garrett grant the final approvals her office is no longer of any use to her because Garrett will have killed off her political career.
