VICA BAYLEY IS WILD MAGAZINE’S ENVIRONMENTALIST OF THE YEAR

Outstanding work on forests and pulp-mill campaigns recognised in national award

The Wilderness Society is delighted that Vica Bayley has been declared ‘Environmentalist of the Year’ by Wild magazine today.

Geoff Law, Campaign Manager for the Wilderness Society, said the national award recognised Vica’s outstanding contribution to the campaigns to protect Tasmania’s oldgrowth forests and to stop the proposed Tamar Valley pulp mill.

“Vica has won the respect and admiration of his peers and the public for his dedication, professionalism and inclusive approach,” said Mr Law.

“Vica has been an essential member of the Tasmanian forests campaign since 2003 and has helped save significant tracts of forest in the Styx and Tarkine. He has provided crucial leadership for the pulp-mill campaign at crucial times.”

“Last year, Vica took the campaign right to the backyards of then Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Environment spokesperson Peter Garrett in Sydney. This year, he helped take people’s concerns about the proposed pulp mill to the ANZ Bank, with a result that turned the tide of the campaign.”

“Throughout his work, Vica has forged close links with fellow environmentalists and with large sectors of the Tasmanian community.”

Vica will receive $1000 as part of the Melbourne-based magazine’s award. For further details on the award, please contact Ross Taylor from Wild magazine on (03) 9826 8482.
