Did you know that the phrase ‘to lick into shape’ is thought to come from ancient (77AD then the medieval period) ideas that bears were born shapeless, and had to be licked into their bear-ish form by their mothers? Or that wombats sent to Britain to be preserved in the nineteenth century were sometimes posed standing on their back legs, as the taxidermists didn’t know what they were supposed to look like?
