Winter bushwalkers urged to plan ahead and stay safe
Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS) and Tasmania Police are reminding bushwalkers to take extra care this winter. Colder temperatures and rapidly changing weather can quickly increase risks across Tasmania’s parks and reserves, particularly in alpine and remote areas.
PWS Ranger in Charge Brendan Moodie said winter can be a rewarding time to explore Tasmania’s natural areas, but walkers need to be well prepared.
“Choose a walk that matches your fitness and experience, check conditions before you leave, carry appropriate gear and be prepared to turn back if conditions deteriorate,” Mr Moodie said.
Tasmania Police Senior Constable Callum Herbert said many winter incidents are preventable with better planning.
“Winter conditions can change quickly, with strong winds, rain, sleet, snow, reduced daylight and freezing temperatures creating additional risks,” Senior Constable Herbert said.
“If you get into difficulty, seek help early, as weather conditions can sometimes delay rescue efforts.”
Key safety reminders for bushwalkers:
- Don’t walk alone where possible.
- Carry warm, weatherproof clothing, food, water, a map, torch and first-aid kit.
- Take a fully charged mobile phone and consider a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) and satellite communication device.
- Research your route, check weather forecasts and ensure the walk matches your abilities.
- Tell someone your plans and expected return time.
- Be prepared to change plans or turn back if conditions worsen.
Walkers are encouraged to seek up-to-date information from official sources and speak with PWS staff if unsure about conditions.
