Will You Help Shape Your Community’s Future?

Residents interested in making a difference in their community are encouraged to explore what it takes to become a Latrobe Councillor, with a free Candidate Information Session being held ahead of this year’s local government elections.

The session is designed for anyone considering nominating for election, whether they have previously served in local government or are thinking about standing for the first time.

Latrobe Council Mayor Peter Freshney said local government provided a unique opportunity for people from all walks of life to contribute to the future direction of the municipality.

“Councillors represent the interests of their community and make decisions that influence the services, facilities and long-term planning of the Latrobe municipality,” Mayor Freshney said.

“If you’ve ever wanted to have a greater say in the future of your community, this information session is a great place to start. It will provide practical information about the role, the commitment involved and the nomination process.”

The Candidate Information Session will be held on Tuesday, 1 September from 6:00pm until 7:00pm at the Latrobe Council Chambers, 170 Gilbert Street, Latrobe. RSVP’s are requested by phoning the Council Office on 6426 4444 or emailing council@latrobe.tas.gov.au before 1 September.

Attendees will hear about the role and responsibilities of Latrobe Council and its elected members; the expectations and responsibilities of serving as a councillor; and the nomination and election process, presented by the Local Government Association of Tasmania (LGAT); with an opportunity to ask questions during an interactive discussion.

Candidate nominations for Tasmania’s 2026 local government elections open on 7 September and close on 21 September, with voting to take place between 5 October and 27 October.

People interested in nominating can also access candidate handbooks, eligibility information, and election resources through the Tasmanian Electoral Commission.
