Tasmanian Times – Statement of Principles
Our Statement of Principles will set the foundations on which to build the next iteration of Tasmanian Times.
We would like to present our Statement of Principles, which will set the foundations on which to build the next iteration of Tasmanian Times.
Statement of Editorial Principles
A Charter for a Free Press
In a democratic society, respectful open debate, discussion, critique, and dissent are essential to informed decision-making. These processes shape values, set priorities, and help communities respond effectively to social, economic, ecological and political challenges.
By fostering a robust, evidence-based public conversation, we believe journalism serves a vital civic role. That is to inform, scrutinise power, and provide a platform for diverse perspectives. All without fear or favour.
Our Commitment
We adopt the Australian Press Council’s Charter for a Free Press in full and commit to independent journalism that strengthens democracy. We will provide a forum for respectful informed debate and uphold the public’s right to know. We will hold power to account, amplify diverse voices and act with integrity. We will ensure our reporting equips all Tasmanians to make thoughtful, well-informed decisions.
Our Media Principles
Media shapes culture and influences generations. With that influence comes responsibility. Our journalism is guided by these principles:
- Independence from political and commercial interests
- Accuracy, verification, and transparency
- Respect for plural viewpoints and open debate
- Accountability for errors and editorial decisions
- Critical scrutiny of power, policy, and institutions
- A focus on the long-term public interest
Our Commitment
We commit to upholding the highest standards of journalistic integrity. We use the Australian Press Council’s Principles as a baseline. We will disclose conflicts of interest, correct errors openly, and remain independent of political or commercial pressures. Our editorial decisions will be guided by evidence, fairness, the law and the enduring public good.
Solutions-Based Journalism
It’s easy to judge when you’re not accountable for the outcome. Solutions-based journalism goes beyond identifying problems to rigorously examine credible responses. It is not advocacy; it is inquiry. We investigate what works, what does not, and why.
Our Commitment
We committed to illuminating evidence-based responses to Tasmania’s challenges. We will critically assess effectiveness, scalability, and unintended consequences. We will foster informed debate, strengthen accountability, and support a constructive public dialogue. We will push the boundaries of understanding without creating conflicts of interest.
Sustainability
Sustainability is the defining issue of our time and the guiding star for current and future generations. Human activity strains climate systems, biodiversity, and natural resources, while economic and social systems face growing instability. Long-term prosperity depends on balancing ecological limits, economic resilience, and social equity.
Our Commitment
We commit to examining sustainability with rigour and independence. We will scrutinise policies, investigate impacts, and expose greenwashing. We will explore evidence-based pathways that align ecological stewardship with economic and social wellbeing.
