Hellyer Mine Reopens – Compliance Issues Fixed
The Hellyer Mine has been cleared to resume operations after the operator, Hellyer Gold Mines Pty Ltd, addressed major statutory breaches and unpaid debts that led to a stop work direction on November 11, 2025.
Mineral Resources Tasmania (MRT) confirmed that the Director of Mines, Alastair Morton, lifted the direction after the company either fixed the non-compliances or formally committed to doing so, and submitted an approved mining plan.

Hellyer mining operations allowed to restart
Operations at the Hellyer Mine can now recommence following satisfactory action by the operator to address outstanding issues.
Director of Mines, Alastair Morton, confirmed that mining activities at the Hellyer Mine can now lawfully recommence.
“Following the progress by Hellyer Gold Mines Pty Ltd in addressing major non-compliances with their obligations under the Mineral Resources Development Act 1995 the stop work direction has now been lifted,” Morton said.
“Mining operations at the site were halted on 11 November 2025 in response to multiple and serious breaches of statutory obligations including substantial unpaid debts and operational non-compliances.
“We have been working closely with Hellyer over recent weeks to rectify these issues.
“Hellyer has either addressed or have formally undertaken to address the outstanding non-compliances in a timely fashion, therefore it is appropriate that mining operations be approved to re-commence on site,” he said.
Morton said Hellyer had provided a mining plan to MRT for assessment which has now been approved meaning that mining operations on the site could now lawfully recommence.
“MRT and Hellyer have worked through a number of significant and complex matters in a short period of time with the aim to provide certainty to the employees and contractors of the Hellyer Gold Mine,” Morton said.
“There are around 500 mining leases in Tasmania and MRT conducts regular compliance inspections.
“Overall the vast majority of mining operations in Tasmania operate to a high standard and comply with Tasmania’s rigorous regulatory framework.
“MRT will always take action if we think that it is necessary to do so, to uphold the integrity of our regulatory framework and protect the interests of the Tasmanian community,” he said.
