Nup to the Cup Protest
Media Release – Animal Liberation Tasmania, 4 November 2025
Nup to the Cup Protest nipaluna/Hobart
Today in nipaluna/Hobart, Animal Liberation Tasmania in conjunction with the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses held a Nup to the Cup Protest, coinciding with the running of the Melbourne Cup.
Members of the community came together despite the rain at a roadside wave in the CBD, including Greens MLC Cassy O’Connor and Independent Kristie Johnston.
Placards included memorials for the 7 horses killed in Tasmanian racing incidents for the 24/25 season, as well as one from this season (Freiburg) who sustained a spinal injury and paralysis at Elwick on 31 August 2025. They also included one from the harness racing industry, Whattagoodreason, who was also killed at Elwick on 29 August 2925 after suffering a fractured leg.
Animal Liberation Tasmania is calling for an end to the exploitation of non-human animals by the racing industries. With 175 horses killed Australia-wide on tracks, this use and abuse of animals has gone on far too long.
Animal lives are their own; they are not ours to exploit.
