Logging in Central Highlands

Logging in Tasmanian ancient forest declared a climate crime scene

Protesters are occupying a recently started logging coupe in Tasmania’s Central Highlands, prime habitat for many threatened species. Protesters are dressed as crime scene investigators to highlight the fact that the destruction of these forests is a climate crime.

“In Tasmania’s Central Highlands, a large area of forest on the edge of Lake King William has just had logging machines move in.

“An entire watershed forest will be flattened unless Forestry Tasmania backs off,” said Jenny Weber, Bob Brown Foundation Campaigns Director.

“Our theatrical action today signifies the ecocide and climate crimes occurring in this logging area and in all other logging areas across Tasmania,” said Colette Harmsen, forest activist with Bob Brown Foundation.

“The ongoing destruction of threatened species’ habitat must stop.

Wildlife found in these forests includes Spotted-tailed Quolls, Tasmanian Devils, Swift Parrots, Wedge-tailed Eagles and Masked Owls.

We are putting Forestry Tasmania under relentless scrutiny for its wildlife killing. We are here in this recently started logging coupe calling for immediate removal of the logging machines,” said Harmsen.

“There is still time for this ancient forest and its wildlife to be saved since logging has only just started,” said Weber.
