New TMAG Exhibit Celebrates Beautiful, Resilient Butterflies
The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) has opened the doors to its latest exhibition, ‘The World of Butterflies’, inviting visitors to a captivating journey into the life of one of nature’s most enchanting creatures.
Featuring hundreds of specimens from around the globe, the exhibition celebrates butterflies not just for their beauty but for their remarkable resilience.
The World of Butterflies showcases how these insects are “bold survivors, clever mimics and masters of transformation,” according to the museum.
TMAG Director Mary Mulcahy highlights the educational and inspirational aspects of the new display.
“As Tasmania’s leading natural and cultural heritage organisation, TMAG plays a vital role in connecting audiences with science and natural history,” Mulcahy said.
She added that the exhibition offers an “inspirational and enriching experience for visitors,” promising something for everyone, “whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a science lover or simply captivated by the beauty of butterflies.”
The exhibition delves into the science behind butterflies’ survival, exploring how colour, camouflage and behaviour help butterflies survive.
Papilionidae, the scientific name for the family of butterflies commonly known as swallowtails.
It also traces the history of butterfly collecting and the role of scientific naming in understanding evolution.
In a timely reflection, the exhibition also addresses the modern-day threats butterflies face, from climate change to habitat loss, and what can be done to protect them.
The World of Butterflies is now open at TMAG.
