Potato mop-top virus detected in Tasmania

The Tasmanian Government is taking swift action, in partnership with Biosecurity Tasmania, following the detection of potato mop-top virus in the North West.

Potato mop-top virus can affect the leaves, shoots and tubers of potato plants, distorting the skin and flesh.

There are no food safety or human health risks associated with the virus, and all potatoes remain safe to consume.

Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Gavin Pearce, said immediate action had been taken following the detection.

“An Incident Management Team has been established to respond, with tracing work underway and control measures now in place,” said Pearce.

“We will work with both state and national industry groups, our biosecurity experts, and other government jurisdictions on next steps.

“My focus is ensuring our farmers are kept up to date while our Incident Management Team responds to the detection.

“We’ve invested almost $13 million in Biosecurity measures in recent times to support Tasmania’s international reputation for premium produce.”

All growers and members of the public are asked to remain vigilant for any signs of disease in potato plants and potato stock.
