1. Join Clubs
University is more than just about the classes. You’ll have many opportunities to join clubs, so do it! Whether that’s joining a writing group, a film club or a swimming club, put yourself out there and you’ll be glad you did.

University is not all about impressing your professors. While that is important for getting good grades (and acquiring positive references), you should also think about yourself. University is all about being social and learning new things. Focusing too much on those aspects may mean your physical and mental health suffers, though. Be sure to prioritise your own well-being from time to time, whether that means saying no to going out drinking for the third night in a row, eating more than just instant ramen throughout the week, or spending some time alone.
7. Speak to Your Professors One-on-One
Many students only see their professors from afar, as they take the furthest back seats in lecture halls and leave once the lecture has ended. Do not let that be you. Your professors are there for more than just to give lectures; a lot of their best advice is given individually. So, schedule meetings with your professors and don’t be afraid to hang around after a lecture if you have a question or comment you want to share with them.
8. Ask for Help
Are you feeling overwhelmed with the amount of work you have? Are you feeling lonely? Perhaps you feel homesick. Whatever problem you have, rest assured, there is help available at your university. Your mental health and well-being matter, so reach out when you need to. Doing so earlier will put you on a better track, leading to an overall improved university experience.
